ArchiPro Commercial Expo speaker profile: Ged Finch

Written by ArchiPro Team | Oct 6, 2022 12:52:42 AM

Ged Finch, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer at XFrame, will be joining the ArchiPro Commercial Expo 2022 to lead the Unlocking New Value with Circular Building Systems education session, brought to you by Teulo. As XFrame was developed to create a wall framing system that reduces building industry waste and facilitates end-of-life recovery and reuse, Ged has first hand insight into the value and opportunities offered by circular building systems.

In the lead up to the ArchiPro Commercial Expo, we caught up with Ged to learn more about his work and what he will be sharing during his session. Thanks to Teulo, education partner for the ArchiPro Commercial Expo, you can earn CPD points from attending Ged’s session.

Hi Ged, please tell us a little bit about yourself and what your work involves.

I am an architecture graduate who founded a circular economy construction technology company called XFrame in 2020. XFrame is a prefabricated modular wall framing technology that makes it possible to easily adapt and modify spaces over time. Today XFrame has project operations in New Zealand, Australia and the United States, with a growing technical delivery team based out of Wellington, New Zealand.

Can you summarise what you’ll be speaking about at the ArchiPro Commercial Expo in a few sentences?

I'll speak about the opportunities that the Circular Economy offers construction, especially for interior designers, shop-fitting, retail, and apartments. This will focus both on the advantages of highly resolved prefabricated systems from a project delivery standpoint (time, certainty and efficiency), and the long term environmental and social benefits of circular building systems. The talk will work through a series of XFrame projects in which circularity has unlocked new value for building owners.

How does the theme of environmental sustainability apply to the work that you do?

At XFrame our point of difference is the unique potential of our construction technology to unlock the circular economy in physical infrastructure. Because of this, environmental sustainability underpins everything we do. As part of this process we invest significantly in workflow automation which enables us to very quickly roll out the XFrame building system. Underpinning this are automated shop drawing and production workflows that take advantage of standardised building sub-elements.

What are some key things you think the design and construction industry needs to embrace in order to build a better future for New Zealand?

We need to be more conscious of the long term impact that the decisions we make today will have. Evaluating the long term utility of what we build will allow us to create more enduring buildings/systems. Alongside this we also need to be more willing to take on risk if it means advancing our industry. With this comes being more open to new products and ways of doing things.

What aspect of the ArchiPro Commercial Expo are you looking forward to most?

The ArchiPro Commercial Expo is a fantastic opportunity to understand the industry's appetite for new, sustainable, building technologies. It will be great to talk to a room full of passionate designers and understand how we can better meet their needs as they strive to meet environmental targets.
