ArchiPro Commercial Expo speaker profile: Brad Crowley

The New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC) are passionate advocates for better buildings, and as Aotearoa’s leading sustainable building not-for-profit organisation, they oversee Green Star accreditation in New Zealand. Green Star is a sustainability rating system available for every commercial building type, achieved by proving the building meets best practice sustainable design and build benchmarks.

Brad Crowley, manager of the Green Star rating tool at the NZGBC, will be joining us on Panel 1: Embracing the Circular Economy at the ArchiPro Commercial Expo 2022. In the lead up to the event, we spoke with Brad to learn more about his work and what he will be bringing to the panel. 

Hi Brad, please tell us a little bit about yourself and what your work involves.  

I am the Manager of the Green Star rating tool at the NZGBC. I assist the Green Star team and identify new opportunities to use the quiver of Green Star tools (Design and As-Built, Performance, Interior, Communities) to make buildings better.

Can you summarise what you’ll be speaking about at the ArchiPro Commercial Expo in a few sentences? 

I will be talking about the benefits of green buildings and why both the marketplace and lending institutions require third party certification of green buildings to avoid green washing.

How does the theme of environmental sustainability apply to the work that you do?  

It has been something I have been involved with for years – I happily devote my time to encouraging buildings to be green and make sure they are certified by a reputable third party (NZGBC). 

What are some key things you think the design and construction industry needs to embrace in order to build a better future for New Zealand? 

Green Star certification! Beyond that it is designing buildings to minimise the amount of carbon embodied into the construction and ensuring the buildings operate as efficiently as possible.
